Dry Eye Omega Benefits thumbnail

Relieving Dry Eye Symptoms

It is thought that 30 million Americans have some form of Dry Eye Syndrome and as many as 70 million may experience dry eye symptoms.  As you know, dry eye symptoms are caused by a chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. As shown below, this lack of lubrication due to a meibomian gland dysfunction can cause persistent dryness, scratching and burning in eyes or a “foreign body sensation.”

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Tear quality is essential for good eye health. Poor tear quality can cause a wide range of symptoms from eye pain to impaired vision and a compromised quality of life.  Omega imbalance (excess omega-6:omega-3 ratio) can cause the meibum to become thick, viscous and inflamed.  Additionally, the imbalance may cause the Meibomian Glands to become blocked, preventing the production of the lipid layer.  Without the lipid layer, the aqueous layer evaporates, causing the ocular surface to become irritated.  Improving the omega-3-lipid component of the tear leads to better tear composition and better lubrication for the eye.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition analyzed data from an ongoing women’s health study.  Women who ate a daily intake of omega-3s EPA and DHA in a natural triglyceride form reduced the risk of Dry Eye by up to 66%.

Furthermore, new data by Dr. Greg Smith, renowned ophthalmologist from the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia shows the first proof that triglyceride-form omega-3s (specifically PRN Dry Eye Omega Benefits) penetrate the meibum and normalize the composition of the oil in the meibum.  These findings suggest strong support for using rTG omega-3s in treating the root cause of Dry Eye Syndrome.

Choosing the right omega-3 for our patients ensures they receive necessary nutrients for optimal tear composition and overall eye health. Omega-3’s rich in EPA and DHA in their natural triglyceride form will enhance your therapeutic outcomes.  PRN Physician Recommended Nutriceuticals® provides the purest, most therapeutically potent omega-3 based nutriceuticals possible.  All of PRN’s omega-3 based products, when taken as recommended, deliver a therapeutic amount of omega-3 EPA and DHA as recommended by the American Heart Association.

Improving Macular Health

Macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of blindness in the United States. Approximately 10 million Americans age 40 and older have some form of vision loss associated with macular degeneration.

As demonstrated in the example below, daily supplementation of omega-3 EPA and DHA in a natural triglyceride form (the same form as fish) may arrest the advancement of drusen and may prevent the occurrence of macular degeneration.

Improving Macular Health

Similarly, a meta-analysis from 2008 reviewing results encompassing 90,000 participants, confirmed that eating a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA could significantly improve macular health.

The National Eye Institute also reported in their Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS1) that daily supplementation of specific vitamins and carotenoids can help reduce the risk of developing early stages of macular degeneration. In fact, in a National Institutes of Health press release from 2001, the National Eye Institute claimed that people at high risk of developing advanced stages of AMD lowered their risk by approximately 25% when treated with a high-dose combination of Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and zinc.  Subsequent studies have shown that the formulation should be modified to remove beta-carotene, and to include all forms of Vitamin E as well as the full Vitamin B complex.  This modified formulation provided the basis for PRN’s Macular Vitamin Benefit.

Choosing a Macular Benefit Package for our patients will provide them with the necessary nutrients for optimal eye health. PRN’s omega-3’s rich in EPA and DHA, in their natural triglyceride form combined with our evidence-based eye vitamin was designed to provide a therapeutic outcome specifically targeting improved macular health.
